Presentation #1

Title: DB2 Version 7 and Version 8 SQL Enhancements
Length: 75 – 90 minutes
Platform: OS/390 and z/OS

Abstract :
Companies now recognize that IT projects must deliver measurable value. Performance is measured by response time, throughput, peak response time, hits, and sessions per second. SQL skill directly impacts performance.

This presentation will start deep down in the DB2 Engine to reveal the four points of filtering and what predicates can be applied where. This intimate knowledge is the basis for the SQL Performance rules identified.

Numerous query examples will be presented to show how to create high performance DB2 for OS/390 applications highlighting the following Version 7 SQL enhancements: limited fetch, scrollable cursors, UNION everywhere, row expressions, self referencing updates with subqueries and many optimization improvements.

V8 SQL enhancements have recently been announced. This presentation will cover the current list, all 19 of them, at the depth of the documentation is available.

Presentation #2

Title: Optimizing DB2 Index Design
Length: 75 – 90 minutes
Platform: OS/390 and z/OS

Companies now recognize that IT projects must deliver measurable value. Performance is measured by response time, throughput, peak response time, hits, and sessions per second. An application that responds well when implemented is usually well accepted by the customer. Index design directly impacts performance, however, lack of staff and financial resources usually puts proactive index design on the bottom of the IT To-Do-List. When was that last time an index was altered/added without an associated performance problem?

Come on a journey to discover the impact of good index design and how to optimize it. DB2 Index Access Paths such as List Prefetch, NonMatching Index Scan, and all others, will be shown in animated detail. Current optimization improvements will be identified that justify rebinding many programs and packages. Leave the presentation with hints and tips for optimizing index design. Once proactive, the next concern will be where to shift the savings.
